Austrian boat skipper certificates FB2/FB3

Dear boat fans!

What we have already announced in the spring, has now actually occurred. The Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology has adopted a new examination regulation, in which the conditions for obtaining the FB2 and FB 3 are much more difficult. However, the examinations can be taken this year according to the old examination regulations of the Yachtsportverband Österreichs.

The FB 3 is important especially because in Croatia currently charter yachts over 30 GT may be driven with an FB 3 only.

If you've been playing with the idea of acquiring a skipper certificate that goes beyond the Croatian license, which is valid internationally, take advantage of this opportunity, because the conditions are drastically difficult in the future.

Prerequisites for obtaining the FB 2 / FB 3

The following requirements are prescribed for obtaining the motorboat driving license in the future:

1. Article 202, par. 5 stipulates:

"(5) The seamanship and seafaring experience under par. 1 no. 3 are proven under consideration of the travel area, the type (motor or sailing yacht) and size of the yacht and its operation as well as steering by day and by night with the logbook, or excerpt copies of the logbook or any other log similar records.

           1. for watt or day trip (§ 2 p. 7) for motor yachts with 50 nautical miles; (FB 1)

           2. for coastal traffic (§ 2 p. 8) for motor yachts with 300 nautical miles and 12 days onboard; (FB 2)

           3. fo coast-adjacent traffic (§ 2 p. 9) for motor yachts with 1000 nautical miles and 36 days aboard, including at least 250 nautical miles as skipper; (FB 3)

 

The following is also required:

Seamanship and maritime experience

§ 14. (1) The seamanship and navigation experience in accordance with § 202 par. 5 of SeeSchFVO is separate for sailing yachts and motor yachts (§ 8 par. 9) and shall include at least the following information documents:

           1. for travel area 1: one night journey with night driving;

           2. for travel area 2: three night trips with one night driving each;

           3. for travel area 3:

               a) five night trips with one night driving each;

               b) for sailing yachts…

c) for motor yachts three crossings between ports, which are at least 100 nautical miles away from each other in a straight line

 (2) In accordance with paragraph 1:

           1. Crossing: is a ride in an almost straight line between two ports, in which the straight connecting includes a distance of at least 20 nautical miles outside driving range 2;

           2. Night driving: is a trip or part of a journey in which a berth is reached in more than two hours after sunset, but no later than two hours before sunrise;

           3. Night driving: is driving between sunset and sunrise for a duration of at least three hours;

 

The strict practical examination is also essential: Each candidate must in future take at least a three-hour test drive with night driving, which also significantly increases the exam expenses, of course.

Especially in §14 (1)3. c.) in connection with § 14 (2) 1, there is a big problem: Such a crossing, of which one must do 3, is hardly possible in the Adriatic. One cannot in this case choose the short distance from Croatia to Italy, but would have to cross the Adriatic from top to bottom (f.i. from our base to Bari in Italy).

So take the opportunity this year to obtain the FB2 / FB 3.

For information only, this is currently required:

1.)    For FB 2: 500 miles as watch captain, 18-board days, 3 night trips with one night drive.

2.)    For FB 3: 1000 nautical miles, including 250 miles as skipper, aboard 30 days and 5 night cruises with 3 night drives.

The essential requirement is that the experience could be made either on a sailing yacht or a motor yacht or distributed to both types of boats so far, while now the conditions have to be made on that boat type for which the examination is being held – i.e. sailing or motor yacht.
